Free Fares

Under the previous government, the Free Fares coalition successfully campaigned for half price public transport fares for young people and people with Community Services Cards. During their 2023 election campaign, the National Party proposed cancelling these public transport discounts once they were in power. The Free Fares campaign responded quickly with the launch of a petition which gained 7,000+ signatures, polling showing majority public support for the new discounts, and ongoing pressure on the Coalition Government throughout this year to retain these wins.

Thanks to this work, some of the new discounts were kept: half price public transport for people with Community Services Cards and half price Total Mobility Services. You can find out how to get a CSC here and how to access half price fares with your CSC here.

The Free Fares campaign continues to advocate for public transport equity and to resist further increases in the cost of public transport.
