Austerity. Redundancies. Cancelled projects and pulled funding. It’s been a tough year for our communities - from cuts to key services to thousands upon thousands of job losses, to increasing rents and sky high food prices.
We’ve responded by campaigning hard for a future with a just economic system that works for people and our planet - not profits for big money and corporations. The road to economic justice is long, and powerful mahi included:
- People over Profits: Stop the Cuts! We came together with unions and community groups to take to the streets and fight back against the government's backwards budget
- We worked with our friends at Tax Justice Aotearoa to launch a campaign for a capital gains tax, as part of a wider campaign for tax transformation.
- We started a petition calling on the Government to halt all plans to privatise Kiwibank, and ran an informative and well attended webinar on why privatising Kiwibank is a terrible idea if the goal is keeping banking costs down here in Aotearoa. The Government has said they won’t look at an asset sale of Kiwibank shares this term, which we should celebrate as a win! They have however indicated it is very much on the cards if reelected, so we should keep this in mind as we keep building the movement for public ownership and against privatisation.
- We collaborated with WEALL Aotearoa to create this video on the anniversary of the beginning of neoliberalism in Aotearoa.
We know we have a challenging couple of years ahead. This Government has made it clear that they intend to draw more and more resources from our public services, and push as much as possible into the private market.
